Ingredients:

  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 3/4 cups granulated sugar, divided
  • 1/2 cup cocoa powder, divided
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 1/3 cup melted butter
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 1/2 cup light brown sugar
  • 1 1/2 cups hot tap water

Directions:

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. In a medium bowl, mix together flour, 1 cup granulated sugar, 1/4 cup cocoa, baking powder, and salt.
  3. Stir in milk, butter, and vanilla and mix until smooth.
  4. Pour the batter into an ungreased 9-inch square baking pan.
  5. In a separate bowl, combine the remaining 3/4 cup granulated sugar, brown sugar, and remaining 1/4 cup cocoa; sprinkle this mixture evenly over the batter.
  6. Pour hot water over the top – do not stir!
  7. Bake for 40 to 45 minutes, until the center is set.
